MEP Design
BTP design energy-efficient mechanical and electrical systems for buildings. Our engineers are trained to integrate these disciplines through all stages of development, from concept design to project handover & post occupancy evaluation.
Your project will benefit from our deep and practical understanding of engineering. We design buildings that are comfortable to use, efficient and easier to maintain. They are tailored to the client's requirements and the architect's creative intent.
Building Physics
BTP can play an essential role from design inception by providing crucial advice on how the form, function and physics of a development can achieve carbon & energy goals. Our advice can extend to incorporate natural ventilation and other passive design measures.
BTP can offer qualitative advice from the outset to avoid larger costs, providing over-arching advice and 'rules of thumb'. As the design progresses, this can develop into quantitative input to provide higher-fidelity information and to fully inform the design process.
Thermal Comfort and Daylight Studies provide quantitative assessment to help design buildings that are both thermally comfortable and provide optimal daylight conditions for occupant wellbeing and energy reduction.
Increasingly a requirement of planning applications and BREEAM assessments, BTP can provide high-quality input to help develop design, and provide the necessary documentation to satisfy planning conditions, BREEAM targets or similar.
CFD analysis, in 2D and 3D is used for complex areas of buildings to provide higher fidelity information than DSM Analysis can achieve. This is often used in areas such as Atria, Data Centres, of where knowledge of extract airflow behaviour is required.
3-Dimensional Dynamic Simulation is one of the sophisticated design tools we use to provide quantitative analysis and add rigour to the design process, to help shape and inform the building and optimise performance.
This tool generally provides zonal and whole-building analysis, as well as information on energy consumption, carbon emissions, thermal performance, internal light levels and air movement. It is an essential tool in designing a well-optimised building.

Utility Infrastructure
The Utility requirements for large master plan developments are often complex, time consuming and can represent significant cost and programme risks. At BTP we believe that we have the utility strategy for large complex sites is a core part of the overall approach to the building services.
The Utility strategy needs to be able to respond quickly to project updates, particularly in relation to phasing and energy strategies. At BTP we have a dedicated specialist team focused on master plan utility strategies. By keeping the expertise within the practice and working very closely with the energy and MEP teams the utility specialists can rapidly respond to proposed design changes and updates.
We understand the importance of building in flexibility to accomodate future changes while at the same time making sure that the utilities are not oversized and prohibitively expensive.
Very often the first task on a project is to review the existing utility information and identify any risks and opportunities to the rest of the design team as quickly as possible. Early and productive engagement with utility providers is essential.
Compliance & Certification
Energy Strategies and Low and Zero Carbon Feasibility Studies establish the concept of how a development will be energised, heated and cooled efficiently, and how LZC technologies can feed into that process productively.
BTP can provide consultancy, modelling and reporting to satisfy Energy Strategy and LZC Feasibility requirements for planning applications.
Part L Building Regulations and Energy Performance Certificates (EPC) are required on construction, sale or let. An EPC provides an energy rating for a building on a scale of A+ to G, allowing perspective buyers or occupiers to gauge the energy efficiency of a building.
With qualified LCEA's with CIBSE, BTP can provide EPC's for any complexity of building. Part L Building Regulations for submission to Building Control can also be provided for new-construction or refurbishment projects.
Digital Engineering & Visualisations
BTP's in-house Virtual CGI studio specialises in all aspects of creating photorealistic images and three dimensional environments. These images allow BTP to work alongside architects, interior and product designers from the concept through to the design process to produce high quality, computer generated images.
Our services include interior CGI's, Architectural CGI's, Animations, 3D floor plans and 360 panoramas, examples of which can be seen below.
